Stardew Valley is coming to Nintendo Switch, which is fantastic news. The Harvest Moon-inspired farming and rural life simulator always seemed like it deserved a home on Nintendo systems and creator ConcernedApe originally planned to bring it to Wii U. Instead, it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime later this year. And it’s going to be the first portable version of the game, which is an incredibly compelling feature in itself.

The cool thing about the Nintendo Switch is that its hardware “gimmick,” or whatever you want to call it, is far more versatile and broad-use than the GamePad or Wii motion controls. The Nintendo Switch lets you take any console game on the go. And that means even traditional console games, or releases that have never before had mobile or handheld ports, are suddenly playable without a television, using the same save data as the console version. If the Switch catches on or breaks out, this will be why.

That’s why Stardew Valley for Nintendo Switch is so exciting. The game is out on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, but not for tablets, Nintendo 3DS or mobile phones. The most mobile the relaxing farm sim gets is on a laptop. But for Switch, you can play on your TV and then take the same save file on the go with you. Stardew Valley is a game that’s easily played in small doses, so it’s ideally set up for that kind of approach.

ConcernedApe has officially confirmed the Switch version several times, including after the formal Switch unveiling. Sadly, the game is missing the initial launch window for the console. However, ConcernedApe is “still planning on bringing it to the platform later this year.” It will definitely be a title to watch for.

Indeed, games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft, although long available on other platforms, will find new life on the Switch. The newfound portability of third-party games is nearly as exciting as Nintendo’s actual first-party releases and definitely one of the Switch’s most exciting features.

What do you think? Are you interested in Stardew Valley for Nintendo Switch? If you’ve played the game before, will you pick it up again so you can play it on the go?
