'Star Trek: Discovery' News: Filming Begins Jan. 24 Under Evocative 'Star Wars' Codename

TrekMovie reports that Star Trek: Discovery will begin shooting Jan. 24 under the codename “Green Harvest,” a clear nod to the Return of the Jedi production codename “Blue Harvest.”

The production is scheduled on the website of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Though the name Star Trek isn’t present, the listed producers — Bryan Fuller, Gretchen Berg, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Kevin Lafferty and Loretta Ramos — can only mean one thing.

In addition to a start date, the union website lists the completion of Star Trek: Discovery production as Sept. 7, 2017, which means production will be ongoing when Star Trek: Discovery premieres in May. Principal photography will take place at Pinewood Studios Toronto (another overlap with Star Wars, which often films at Pinewood Studios in England).

There’s probably not much to read into the codename, but it does suggest the kinship between the two series, with the hope of a similar success baked in. Will Star Trek: Discovery be as slickly action-adventure-y as its accompanying movie series? The presence of Akiva Goldsman suggests CBS is hoping for a hit.
