2016 marks the 20th anniversary of 'Soul Calibur' Bandai Namco

With fighting games seemingly coming out left and right, one franchise that hasn’t seen a new title in some time the Soul Calibur.

Many fans may not realize 2016 is actually the 20th anniversary of the franchise. To celebrate, Bandai Namco released a trailer showing every game in the Soul Calibur franchise from Soul Blade in 1996 all the way to the spin-off, Lost Swords in 2014.

Check out the Soul Calibur 20th anniversary trailer below.

With the release of this trailer, you’d expect fans of Soul Calibur to come out in droves asking when the next game is coming out.

The last main Soul Calibur game was Soul Calibur V in 2012, which introduced the children of Cassandra (a mainstay in the series for most of the franchise’s existence), but a proper Soul Calibur game has not made the jump to the PS4/Xbox One generation.

Perhaps Bandai Namco will re-release the older Soul Calibur games in a collected edition. With so many companies celebrating long anniversaries (especially 20 years) like The Pokémon Company celebrating 20 years of Pokémon in 2016, it would be a shame if Bandai Namco doesn’t announce anything in the coming days for the franchise.

We’ve reached out to Bandai Namco for comment on the 20th Anniversary trailer and whether there are any immediate plans for the franchise in 2017. We will update as soon as we get a response.

In the meantime, let us know whether you would want a new Soul Calibur game or would settle for a collected edition of the main games in the comments section below.
