Sony has announced a new initiative called "The Playerbase," which offers a way to add players into a game and delivers a never-before-seen interactive experience.
Sony's The Playerbase Scans Players into Games
According to a new blog post from PlayStation, The Playerbase is a new and unique opportunity for PlayStation's biggest fans to step into some of the biggest game worlds by having their likeness scanned and appear within the company's first-party game.
This will be a community program available in select markets, with the process to join requiring several steps.
First, applicants need to sign in with a PlayStation account ID, answer questions about their PlayStation experience, and then they will be asked to share additional information.
Sony will review submissions and invite a limited group of applicants for video interviews as part of the selection process. Here, players need to explain what PlayStation, its games, and its experiences mean to them.
Only one fan is to be selected to be the maiden scan via The Playerbase. The program is now welcoming registrants and is open to players aged 18 and older in select markets across the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Africa, and Australia.
'Gran Turismo 7' Gets the First Real Player Avatar
Sony's chosen player will be scanned and sent to "Gran Turismo 7," the first game where The Playerbase will bring its first real player avatar to.
As mentioned earlier, only one player will be featured in this pilot, where their face will be rendered as a character portrait consistent with how the game displays its characters.
Apart from being featured as the first real person in-game character, that player will also be brought to a visual arts studio in Los Angeles for a dedicated scanning session and will work alongside a designer to produce a personal Fantasy Logo and their very own vehicle livery.
Both the logo and the livery will be given a permanent spot in the game's Showcase menu. Sony will also handle travel and lodging for the winner and one additional guest.
Sony anticipates announcing the "Gran Turismo 7" winner sometime during summer 2026 and has indicated that the program is built to grow, with plans to bring in more PlayStation titles in the future.
