At Blizzcon today, Blizzard revealed Overwatch ’s latest hero Sombra, putting an end to their exhausting ARG and finally allowing us to revel in Talon’s snappy hacker. But it turns out that La Princesa de Los Boops is not actually on Talon’s side. So what does Sombra’s reveal trailer tell us about Sombra’s place in the Overwatch universe - and the universe’s evolving lore?

Volskaya is building their first new mechs in a decade.

The mechs are big, clunky, and of course, operated by people. But that leaves them no less vulnerable to Sombra’s hacking, as the “Infiltration” short clearly shows.

Katya Volskaya, leader of Russia’s efforts against the omnics, is getting her tech from those very same omnics.

Russia suffered greatly against the omnics, a suffering that is even called out in Zarya’s backstory. It’s no wonder that Katya will cooperate with Sombra if necessary in order to keep her double-dealing out of the public eye. Sombra points out that Katya is seen as Russia’s most powerful woman, a great leader against the omnic threat, which makes her double-dealing even more dangerous to reveal.

As for the technology, it appears to be some sort of omnic reactor core which we can see floating in Katya’s hand, a power source that’s also seen in the blueprints Sombra shows her.

Sombra is blackmailing Volskaya under Talon’s nose and without their knowledge.

Sombra plucks her earbud out of her ear when Reaper presses her on her status, clearly indicating that blackmailing Katya is a private, Sombra special - or at least that Talon’s not in on this hack.

For Sombra, information is power.

Sombra’s bio states quite plainly that “Sombra uses information to manipulate those in power.” Sombra was left orphaned in the wake of the Omnic crisis, but she was too busy surviving to give into some desperate need for revenge. Instead, she joined the Los Muertos gang, which gave her stability, motivation and a platform for her “many conquests” and “audacious hacks.” Her exploits ultimately led to an uprising against Mexico’s LumériCo.

Even the master hacker has been hacked once before.

After Sombra’s security was compromised, she was forced to go underground. There’s no way Sombra wants to go through all of that again, risking her identity once more, so it’s small wonder that she’s joined up with a group like Talon that has the resources to protect her. She did it before with Los Muertos.

Sombra doesn’t hack for the lulz: she has a purpose.

All of Sombra’s hacking efforts lead to big things. They make her name known and have major repercussions in the real world. Sombra already proved her abilities once against LumériCo, helping to incite a “popular revolution” in Mexico. With the info she has on Volskaya, Sombra could start massive civil unrest in Russia. Is that her real purpose?

Is Sombra working for Sombra?

By blackmailing Volskaya, Sombra has a unique “in” to Russia’s most powerful leader. Is she really going to use that only for personal gain? That doesn’t seem out of the question considering her supreme confidence in herself and her tendency for splashy stunts.

But Sombra’s acquired a “string of admirers” in the wake of her many high-profile hacking exploits. Killing Volskaya was a Talon objective: Sombra lied brazenly about the target escaping after making sure her own objectives were secured instead.

Could Sombra have secured this line to Volskaya for another group’s sake?

Volskaya’s got Zarya on speed dial.

It comes as no surprise that our lovable Siberian bear is the first person Volskaya goes to in a pinch. Famously anti-omnic and driven, Zarya is one hell of a nemesis to overcome. Can’t hack these guns, Sombra! So is Zarya set up against Sombra, or is Volskaya pointing Zarya in a different direction entirely?

Looks like we’ll have to wait till Overwatch ’s next short (or possibly comics) to find out if Sombra’s secret gamble pays off, or if Talon finds out and acts on it first.
