Samsung has solidified plans to release two curved-display smartphones in early 2017, according to reports from the Korea Herald . There will reportedly be a 5.1-inch and a 5.5-inch smartphone announced, both featuring dual-edge displays, similar to the Galaxy Note 7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Samsung hinted in August , after the launch of the Galaxy Note 7, that the dual-edge display may become a staple feature on all future Samsung smartphones. At that time, analysts did not expect Samsung would make the change immediately; however, the design feature has proven to be well received by users.

Samsung’s first curved-display device was the Galaxy Note Edge, which had a single curve on its right side. After that was the Galaxy S6 Edge, which introduced the dual-edge display. Since then Samsung has launched the Galaxy S6 Edge +, the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Galaxy Note 7, meaning it has released more curved display flagships than flat display since 2014.

Samsung made a statement in August by releasing only one handset, the Galaxy Note 7. The Note 7 stands out among it Galaxy devices as the only one to feature a curved display and an S-Pen stylus. The Galaxy Note 7 design, with shallow curves to allow for more flat screen real estate, is inspired by the Galaxy S7 Edge, which is a phablet-sized device without a stylus.

Several launches of Samsung’s curved display devices have been marred with delays due to issues with mass producing the displays. However, Samsung has reportedly resolved many of these issues, not only planning more curved display smartphones for its own brand, but also licensing the technology to other smartphone manufacturers, including Huawei and Xiaomi.

Rumors suggest the Galaxy S8 may feature a 4K display and a 12- and 13-megapixel dual-camera setup, as well as 6GB of RAM. The smartphone(s) will likely be announced at Mobile World Congress in February.
