The next installment of the renowned Japanese horror franchise is here, and "Resident Evil 9" has recently been unveiled by Capcom to succeed the harrowing events of "Resident Evil 8: Village." It has been four years since Capcom released the last "Resident Evil" game and the company claimed that the next game is set for 2026, five years after the lastmainline game dropped.
It was revealed that the next game would be called "Resident Evil Requiem," without any mentions of a number like its previous releases in the franchise, and it marks the end of numbered titles in its releases moving forward.
'Resident Evil Requiem' Unveiled: 9th Game Is Here
Capcom has joined the latest showcase event by Sony's PlayStation State of Play 2025, and here, they revealed the next installation of their renowned action horror franchise that is now called "Resident Evil Requiem." This game is the expected ninth mainline installment of the franchise, but it did not feature the numbered name that the series has adopted over the years.
This same game is the touted "Resident Evil 9" which succeeds the 2021 release of the company, centering on following the two games that told the story of Ethan Winters in "Biohazard" and "Village." Previous reports shared rumors that the next "Resident Evil" game would bring back Leon Kennedy as the main playable character, but the latest breakdown and trailer confirmed that it would not be him.
Instead, it would be Grace who would be leading the next game, and she is best known as the daughter of investigative reporter and previous Raccoon City resident, Alyssa Ashcroft, who was a character in previous installments. Alyssa Ashcroft was a previous playable character in a spinoff game of the franchise, "Resident Evil Outbreak," which wasreleased in 2003, a game that was first released on the PlayStation 2 and adopted a survival horror genre.
Here's What to Expect From 'Resident Evil Requiem'
The two previous "Resident Evil" games featured Ethan Winters as their lead character, and this led to many speculations that it would be his daughter, Rose Winters, who would helm the mantle and continue the fight. However, it appears that the developers are focusing on a new white-haired girl to lead this next title, with Grace Ashcroft following in the footsteps of her mother.
"Resident Evil Requiem's" trailer shows off a return to Raccoon City after it was bombed by a nuclear bomb to effectively shut down the outbreak of the virus that was caused by the nefarious Umbrella Corporation. Here, Grace would be investigating a series of dead bodies appearing in the city, especially as a new mysterious and nefarious entity is yet again, on the rise.
Based on this latest trailer, Capcom has a lot of massive new experiences that are in store for gamers once this next title drops, with one of its main features being the Raccoon City homecoming after many years of exploring new locations in the franchise. "Resident Evil Requiem" is coming next year, but no specific dates have still unveiled.
