Wonder Trade is back in Pokémon Sun and Moon, so players who want to experience the joy of a thousand Yungoos (Yungooses? Yungeese?) can now do so. If you’re done trading with your friends, why not sign onto Wonder Trade and get yourself a surprise? Don’t expect too much in these early days, but here’s how to use Wonder Trade -- and what to watch out for.

To access Wonder Trade, just follow these instructions:

  • Hit “x”

  • Select “Festival Plaza” (if you’ve never been to the Festival Plaza, you’ll have to sit through a somewhat lengthy tutorial)

  • On the bottom screen, select “Trade”

  • Select “Wonder Trade”

  • Connect to the Internet and save your game

  • Select “Start”

  • Choose the Pokémon you’re giving away

  • The system will start searching for a partner for you

  • Receive your new Yungoose or Ledyba (there’s almost nothing else out there right now)

  • Send it back out into the wilds until you get something else, anything else, please based PokéGods

In all seriousness, expect to get a lot of Japanese Pokémon in Wonder Trade -- especially Yungoos and Ledyba. The highlight of my Wonder Trades were a Japanese Ledyba named, in English, “Not flabebe” (the disappointment, it’s tangible) and a Japanese Slowpoke, at which point I ended my Wonder Trade experience.

While Lvl 3 Ledyba are innocent enough, Pokémon save editor PKHeX has been live for over a week:

Impossible fake Pokemon and hacked rare items are already beginning to circulate, according to Kotaku:

In the end, if you don’t plan to play competitively or don’t care about the breeding and IV metagame, hacked Pokémon scarcely seem a big deal, but if you intend on keeping it legit, you might want to keep your eyes peeled for anything that looks too good to be true. After all, Nintendo did recently ban early users with ROMs from online access, indicating some level of interest in moderating the current-gen community. Game Freak has never been too harsh on the hackers, but still.
