'Pokemon Black and White' Anniversary Set Will Feature 'Brand-New Rarity' For Reshiram, Zekrom

The Black and White era finally got an extremely rare set it deserves.

The "Pokémon Trading Card Game" (TCG) is ready to rock with the arrival of the Black Bolt and White Flare expansions, out June 6 in Japan and July 18 globally.

The much-heralded sets will highlight all 156 Unova region Pokémon, bringing enthusiasts back to the beloved fifth-generation games while introducing a fresh new BWR rarity that's making waves.

The most attention-grabbing addition to these new sets is the inclusion of BWR rarity cards, a single-color full-art treatment that takes us back to the early 2010s Black & White period.

According to VGC, these cards boast high contrast and minimalist style: an all-black Zekrom with white lettering, an all-white Reshiram with black lettering, and a vivid red Victini card reserved for Japan's "Victini BWR Battle" tournaments this summer.

PokéBeach and fan feedback describe the BWR style as a contemporary tribute to the classic Full Art cards from the 2011 BW sets, which are instant classics. Users on the forums mention that the cards not only feel nostalgic but also provide a new visual identity that differentiates them from recent products.

Black Bolt and White Flare Sets Honor Unova Heritage

Both sets will spotlight the entire Unova Pokédex, reminding players of Pokémon like Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott, and beloved evolutions. But the sets won't merely be nostalgic—they'll feature brand-new art, reprints, and competitive staples like:

  • Hilda and Cheren Trainer cards
  • Professor's Research: Juniper
  • The mighty Prism Energy

Artists such as sowsow and Jerky are adding gorgeous fresh images, including Lillipup and Tynamo line artwork. Jerky, with their whimsical and dreamy art style, continues to bring life to the cards with their flair as usual.

Are More 'BWR' Cards Coming Soon?

To date, just three BWR cards have been officially unveiled. But considering their nod to earlier monochrome full-art cards like Latios, Latias, Articuno, and Terrakion, additional ones may be coming. The approach appears to be geared toward returning veteran collectors to the fold while presenting newcomers with something visually impressive and extremely collectible.

According to ScreenRant, the June 6 Japanese release of Black Bolt and White Flare includes not only regular booster packs but also 35-card specialty packs with guaranteed Illustration Rares. These specialty packs provide an added level of excitement and value to the release, though their West availability is not confirmed.

The English version of these sets will be released on July 18, presumably under a new title but with the same core elements and rarity framework. For sure, these would be some of the most sought-after cards for collectors soon.
