A new report is now circulating about the possible new features and experiences coming to the rumored PlayStation handheld console, which was reportedly already under development by the company. Sony was rumored to be joining the current handheld revolution led by the likes of Valve with their Steam Deck, ASUS with the ROG Ally, Nintendo with the Nintendo Switch, and more.
The latest rumor is now discussing the upcoming features that are reportedly coming to the PlayStation handheld, with the device set to deliver AI upscaling and additional features to users, bringing more powerful experiences.
PlayStation Handheld Rumors: AI Upscaling and More
A new claim from a renowned insider, based on the latest discussions on the NeoGAF forum, suggests that the upcoming PlayStation handheld will feature AI upscaling capabilities for users once it becomes available. The information came from renowned hardware insider, KeplerL2, who shared in the forum that PlayStation's handheld will feature hardware capable of offering AI upscaling.
To be more exact, the insider claimed that Sony's PlayStation handheld would feature an AMD processor capable of AI upscaling, which essentially connects to a known feature available on its latest console. According to GameRant, Sony is known for using AMD chips with upscaling capabilities on its PlayStation tabletop consoles, with the PS5 Pro offering the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler.
Sony has been previously rumored on multiple occasions to be working on a new portable gaming console that would succeed the likes of its PSP (PlayStation Portable) and the PS Vita. While Sony experienced a brief pause in developing handhelds, the company introduced the PlayStation Portable in late 2004, which initially focused on Remote Play exclusivity before its latest upgrade to access games without the need for a PS5.
Due to the growing popularity of handheld gaming consoles, Sony reportedly decided to re-enter the world of portables, aiming to rival devices like the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch.
What to Expect From Sony's Future Portable Console?
Sony's PlayStation handheld, rumored to be under development and capable of AI upscaling, would be powered by an unnamed AMD processor that incorporates this technology. While the exact model of this AMD chip is not yet revealed, it was shared that the company's UDNA GPU architecture will be designed for this PlayStation handheld and offer better performance than existing consoles.
On the other hand, the renowned insider also claimed that it is expected that Sony will give the PlayStation handheld a 16GB LPDDR5X memory, which will help it process games and other functions alongside its still unnamed chip. It was revealed that while the PlayStation Portal was released as a complement to the PS5, it served as the testing grounds for a full-fledged handheld from the company.
It is also important to note that the insider claimed that this AI upscaler from AMD would be exclusive to the PlayStation handheld, with KeplerL2 saying that the semiconductor company will not create a Z3 mobile chip.
