Warner Bros. Games's restructuring may be more than what is expected as it has been rumored that PlayStation is now looking to acquire one part of the studio that holds two important franchises of the company.

The recent split of Warner Bros. Discovery into two smaller companies is now prompting sale rumors featuring two IPs, "Mortal Kombat" and DC, with Sony's PlayStation reportedly interested in the sale.

It is important to note that WB Games has recently undergone a restructuring that reaffirmed the company's dedication to continuing its game development, focusing on its three tentpole IPs.

PlayStation to Acquire WB Game's 'MK,' DC?

A new report from SE Scoops claims that there are anonymous sources who have now revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery's split already has an interested buyer looking to acquire one part of the company, and that is PlayStation.

Because of the split, a specific branch of WBD is now reportedly valuable to the eyes of Sony's gaming division as it consists of the IPs "Mortal Kombat" and DC.

Sony has developed and has owned several arcade-style fighting games in the past, but nothing is close to the significance of "Mortal Kombat," which is currently one of the biggest franchises there is. It remains unknown how PlayStation plans to improve the struggling franchise should a sale take place, particularly as NetherRealm Studios already has massive plans for its future games.

On the other hand, this deal could also empower Sony to control and own one of the biggest comic book franchises in the world, DC. It should be noted that Sony is already known to be the owner of Marvel's "Spider-Man" character.

Warner Bros. Discovery's DC is known for struggling in terms of game development, following "Suicide Squad's" flop, as well as "Wonder Woman's" cancelation.

As of press time, the rumor has not been confirmed, according to GameRant.

Warner Bros. Discovery's Split: Will a Sale Happen?

The recent split done by Warner Bros. Discovery effectively tore the company into two entities, with PlayStation looking to acquire the WBD Streaming and Studios which owns the said game franchises. This specific company owns significant IPs from WBD, including its film and television libraries, as well as the major franchises under Warner Bros. Games.

PlayStation's interest in acquiring WBD's Streaming and Studios remains unconfirmed, and this information is not yet verified by others, so it may only be a rumor.

The rumor comes after Warner Bros. Games' recent restructuring where different executives were assigned to more important roles within the company, as well as the company's refocus on its three famed franchises, including "Harry Potter," "Mortal Kombat," and DC.

Should PlayStation acquire the company, all of the game developments that are coming from WB Games would now be done under Sony's gaming division, expanding their IPs and franchises as well. Some of the rumored projects include a "Hogwarts Legacy" sequel, the rumored "Injustice 3," a new fighting game from NetherRealm, and more.
