A new, behind-the-scenes look at Stick of Truth sequel, South Park: The Fractured But Whole not only provides loads of new gameplay footage, but also reveals the game’s original, poopier name and the involvement of YouTube streamer PewDiePie.

Sure, the title is already a pun about anal fissures, but South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker originally wanted the title to be South Park: The Butthole of Time . But it seems ever since the days of Beavis & , butt suffixes have been a big no-no with retailers. Though both titles — Fractured and Butthole — seem like your standard South Park joke, the original title alludes to a new game mechanic. This time your farts can be used to bend time.

One of the more interesting reveals is the role game streamer PewDiePie had in The Fractured But Whole ’s development.

“I started going back and watching PewDiePie play Stick of Truth, Parker says at 2:28, “and it was just the best material I could have because I was watching an audience member play it and what they were thinking about it.”

This wouldn’t be the first time PewDiePie and South Park have crossed paths. The YouTube star appeared in the ninth and tenth episodes of Season 18.

PewDiePie’s feedback partially explains the game’s more advanced combat system, which trades out traditional JRPG gameplay for a more elaborate turn-based strategy board, with different positions in the combat environment affecting how attacks work.

All in all, South Park: The Fractured But Whole looks like a major evolution of the core gameplay and storytelling of Stick of Truth. And now we know, at least a little bit, we have PewDiePie to thank for that.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Review: Marvel Polish, DC Inspiration
South Park: The Fractured But Whole is a polished and improved sequel to The Stick of Truth, but we're still ambivalent about the Marvel Cinematic Universe parody angle.
  • tactical combat
  • great environmental puzzles
  • seamless adaptation of South Park
  • engaging boss encounters
  • Coon and Friends parody was already stale
  • sometimes more referential than funny on its own
  • several game mechanics feel extraneous
