DayZ creator Dean “Rocket” Hall has returned to Steam Early Access with a new strategy game, 16 months after departing Bohemia Interactive, but anyone hoping to spend some hands-on time with Out Of Ammo is going to need a powerful gaming computer and an HTC Vive.

Out Of Ammo is being developed by RocketWerkz, the independent studio Hall founded after leaving Bohemia at the end of 2014. The studio’s first project is currently only $14.99, a price that should help with those who’ve already spent hundreds on their Vive, but is only compatible with HTC’s virtual reality headset right now. The use of touch controllers appears to be the only thing keeping the games tied to the Vive, so it’s possible we could see Out Of Ammo get Rift support whenever Oculus’ Touch controllers finally emerge, but nothing has been confirmed by the studio at this time.

As for the game itself, Out Of Ammo is a strategy game that lets players swap back and forth between traditional real-time strategy and first-person shooters. You primary objective is to defend your base from incoming waves of enemies, using a combination of offensive and defensive structures that can be built by the player. You’ll also have the option to take control of an individual unit and trying to turn the tide of battle yourself.

RocketWerkz says it expects Out Of Ammo to stay in Early Access for somewhere between two and six months; however, the studio’s primary goal for Early Access is to get input from the VR community and polish the existing experience. RocketWerkz is also developing new content for the game, with plans to roll out new weapons and environments throughout the game’s time in Early Access. The studio also says it has no plans to charge more for Out Of Ammo after the game’s official debut.

To get a better idea of what to expect from Out Of Ammo, take a couple of minutes to watch the trailer that also debuted over the weekend. Then head down to the comments section, share your impressions of Out Of Ammo, and let us know if this is the kind of game you want to play in VR.

Out Of Ammo is in development for the HTC Vive. There’s currently no timeline for the game’s departure from the Early Access program.
