Netflix released the first minute of footage from the premiere episode of Orange is the New Black Season 5, and it picks up right where the dramatic Season 4 finale left off. Is this the start of an all-out riot at Litchfield, or will the uprising be nipped in the bud?
When we say the new footage picks up right where the last episode of Season 4 left off, we mean that in the most literal possible way. Daya (Dascha Polanco) is pointing a gun at CO Humphrey (Michael Torpey), frowning in deliberation as she cocks the weapon amidst a chorus of shouting from her fellow inmates, urging her to pull the trigger. There’s a lot of familiar faces urging her to do it, with emotions running high after the disgraceful death of Poussey.

So far so good, right? Just as things are getting interesting with Daya, along comes Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon), bumbling obliviously down the hall talking out turning over a new leaf and “staying out of trouble.” Oh, shut your yap and get lost, Piper.
The footage ends with the sound of a shot fired as the screen fades to black. Does Daya pull the trigger? As much as we’d love to see the women get revenge against this particularly sadistic crop of COs (remember when Humphrey made Maritza eat a baby mouse?), we doubt Daya goes through with it. She’s got her baby girl and mother to think of, after all, and it’s been clear throughout the previous four seasons of OITNB that family is hugely important to her. Shooting Humphrey now seems dramatically out of character for her.
So who fires the gun? Most likely, it’s another guard coming to Humphrey’s rescue. On the other hand, it’s possible the show’s creators might throw us for a loop. In the Season 4 finale, CO Fischer (Lauren Lapkus) was subdued along with Humphrey; there might be a second gun out there waiting for an opportunistic inmate to grasp.
