A new Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom gameplay video debuted this week, featuring more than 25 minutes of new footage from the upcoming JRPG. The preview offers an early look at several modes from the non-linear sequel to 2013’s Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, including Skirmish mode and boss encounter teased in previous Revenant Kingdom trailers.

The gameplay video begins with a short tour of Skirmish mode. For those who aren’t unaware, Ni no Kuni 2 will supplement its action-RPG combat encounters with more strategic army-vs-army scenarios that play out on the world map. It looks similar to standard world exploration, which pairs “chibi” iterations of the NnK2 cast with semi-realistic environments. Each member of King Evan’s party will have “special tactics” their troops can utilize in battle. Over time, you’ll learn to train new unit types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. But the new video doesn’t show much more than a quick blitz of a small encampment with little more than a few guards and some archery towers to defend it.

After the sneak peek at Skirmish mode, we’re treated to sights and sounds a bit more common to the JRPG genre. There’s plenty of footage of the game’s Pikmin-esque combat and the new video also includes a preview of the Wyvern Warlord from previous Ni no Kuni 2 videos. There aren’t any surprises during these segments, just more of what we’ve seen in previous gameplay videos; however, that doesn’t make the release any less exciting for fans still disappointed that we have to wait until March to get our hands on NnK2.

Unfortunately, this week’s Ni no Kuni 2 preview didn’t include Kingdom mode footage. We’ve known for months Revenant Kingdom will include something similar to traditional city builders, like SimCity, as King Evan looks to rebuild his kingdom. A few additional details get mentioned this week, like Kingdom mode’s research feature, but a 30-second trailer from December offered our only actual look at that content. Fans are still mostly in the dark and will have to hope for more information between now and launch day.

Fair warning, the new Ni no Kuni 2 footage does contain some light story spoilers, so if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing you might want to hold off for now. But anyone else interested in an early look at Revenant Kingdom should definitely check out the new gameplay. Then head down to the comments and let us know what you hope to see in NnK2 later this year.

Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is in development for PC and PlayStation 4. The game debuts March 23, 2018.
