Five minutes of new Metal Gear Survive footage debuted this week, offering fans a preview of the single-player action they can expect from the multiplayer-ready survival game. And you might be surprised by how much we still have to learn about the upcoming project, set between the events Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, despite the fact we’re now just six weeks from launch.

Tonally, the new Metal Gear Survive footage is very different from clips featured in other trailers. Many sections have a survival-horror feel to them, more akin to Resident Evil or Silent Hill than the Metal Gear titles fans fell in love with,.There are even some new Mother Base workers to meet, and the new footage suggests the FOXHOUND forces who’ve been sucked through the wormhole might not be the only human faction we’ll encounter. The main character, who will look different for each MGS player, rescues survivors from a variety of backgrounds, some of whom may even be part of another military or law enforcement group. We’ll probably have to wait until the game is out to learn more about the residents of Metal Gear Survive’s strange new dimension. But the presence of non-military personnel does add a new dimension to the story.

The new footage also provides another look at Survive’s crafting mechanics. Players will retrieve and repurpose an absolutely staggering number of items, from food and beverages (used to restore health) to folding chairs and military-grade supplies. We’ll even be able to chop down trees and use the resulting lumber to build new weapons and fortifications back at HQ. Players will also get a closer look at those systems during this month’s Metal Gear Survive beta.

For an early look at Metal Gear Survive, check out the new single-player footage published by IGN. Then head down to the comments and let us know if you plan to participate in the MGS beta when it begins in a few weeks.

Metal Gear Survive is in development for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The console beta will run Jan. 18-21 and the game debuts Feb. 20, 2018.
