Kingdom Hearts 3 likely won’t release for quite some time, but there’s a lot we can learn about it from its direct predecessor, Kingdom Hearts 2.8. Now that Game Informer ’s review of 2.8 (via KH13 ) has arrived, here are some story details, difficulty levels and feature improvements to be aware of.

First and foremost is a strong affirmation that the new content in Kingdom Hearts 2.8, called A Fragmentary Passage, does indeed connect in a huge way to Kingdom Hearts 3. Avoiding spoilers, the publication mentions a lengthy cutscene at the end of the four-hour section that shows characters “embarking on the next part of their journey.”

It’s worth noting that the strong connection between Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and Kingdom Hearts 3 has been discussed by Square Enix producers in the past. What we know now, however, is that link seems to be established in the 2017 title’s closing moments.

In addition to offering up that tiny plot tidbit, the review also touches on some interesting details about Kingdom Hearts 2.8 that may be a sign of things to come for Kingdom Hearts 3. For one, the Fragmentary Passage Critical Mode difficulty must be unlocked by beating that segment first. With regard to gameplay, specific areas on the new world map each have their own objectives. It’s also noted that the prologue’s revised camera is the best the series has seen to date.

For Kingdom Hearts 3, then, we could be looking at many of the same scenarios. After all, with such proven continuity between both titles, we almost expect it. Especially with regard to the new camera, that’s certainly something we’ll see migrated and possibly even iterated further. Beyond that, the mission-based structure and unlockable difficulties are very strong possibilities too.

Earlier this week we reported on a Japanese interview that mentioned possibly borrowing 2.8’s character customization features for the future. Other adoptions in that vein are likely on the table.

What these changes essentially imply is that Kingdom Hearts 3 intends to expand on the conventions of the series while ironing out some of its most chronic issues. That’s about the most we could ask for from any sequel, and it shows signs of promise for the game that’s still in the thick of development. A Kingdom Hearts 2.8 cliffhanger will make the wait even tougher to endure.

For those who are curious, Game Informer scored Kingdom Hearts 2.8 with an 8.5 out of 10. The title was described as “the best collection for getting you prepared for what’s ahead.” These kinds of accolades essentially match last week’s review from Famitsu.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development for PS4 and Xbox One. Kingdom Hearts 2.8 comes to PS4 on Jan. 24.
