Developer Rockstar recently announced that GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 were two of the best-selling games of the last decade. It’s not surprising that GTA 5 has topped the sales charts. While several other AAA titles came and went, GTA 5 was always one of the best performers in almost every month since its release. This is largely thanks to Rockstar's continuous support for GTA Online, which kept the player base engaged. It also doesn't hurt that GTA Online had three distinct launches (PS3/360 Era, PS4/Xbox One era, and PC).
According to the NPD data, GTA5 is the best-selling game of the decade in terms of US dollar sales. Even six years after the initial launch, the GTA Online component of the game is still going strong. GTA Online saw its highest player count this past December thanks to its Diamond Casino update and the Diamond Casino Heist, which was released in the same month.
All the praise is not only for GTA 5. Red Dead Redemption 2 has made some serious waves as well. Rockstar claims that it was a top-selling game of the last four years in US dollars. Red Dead also saw a high player count in December due to its Moonshiners update. Both games combined have over 150 million hits worldwide. Those are some serious numbers.
To celebrate the sales milestone, Rockstar has decided to give away several freebies to its player base. GTA Online players will be able to collect up to $2 million in in-game currency over the next few weeks. The first million will be awarded by playing between January 30 and February 5, while the second million requires players to log in from February 6 to 12.
It’s not only GTA players that will get some appreciation. Red Dead Online players will get access to several items by playing during select dates. If you play between January 28 and February 3 you can get A Gunslinger Cache, which will contain a Schofield Revolver, a reward for one free Varmint Rifle, and the Devastating Ammo Bundle. You can also get the Bounty Hunter's Kit if you play from February 4 to 10. This contains a Bounty Hunter license, 25 Bolas, and 25 Tracking Arrows.
