The rumor mill is overrun with claims about the upcoming Galaxy Note 7 smartphone. The latest news doubles down on details about the device’s name, specs and special features. Check out the latest below.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Name

Tech informant Evan Blass claims to have uncovered branding renders confirming Samsung’s upcoming smartphone will be called the Galaxy Note 7. Many were expecting the Galaxy Note 6 to follow the Galaxy Note 5, which released in 2015. However, reports suggest Samsung decided to go against the existing naming sequence to match up the Galaxy Note 7 with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, currently on the market.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Specs

Blass and the Twitter account Samsung Leaks have also shared possible spec details for the Galaxy Note 7, which include a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with microSD expansion, a 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera and a USB Type-C port with Quick Charge 3.0. The smartphone is also expected to introduce an iris scanner, host a fingerprint scanner and may have IP68-rated water and dust resistance. Color options expected include black, silver and blue. The blue options may be called Blue Coral, according to Android Community .

Reports from Weibo suggest the device will run a new Qualcomm chip, possibly called the Snapdragon 821 or 823 in one variant, while another variant may run a Exynos 8893, developed by Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Iris Scanner

While informants have reported about the Galaxy Note 7 iris scanner , there have also been details directly from Samsung. Patently Mobile recently discovered a patent filed by Samsung, which details how an “iris recognition system” may work on a mobile device. This patent has surfaced after Samsung trademarks for the names “Galaxy Iris” and “Galaxy Eyeprint,” which many publications speculate could be the names of manufacturer’s iris scanners. Samsung already has a device with an iris scanner on the market, the Galaxy Tab Iris , a tablet geared for government and businesses in India. Other reports indicate Samsung may work with the Korean film company Patron to develop modules including iris scanners.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Software

Rumors remain unclear whether the Galaxy Note 7 will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow or Android N, but a new video claims to showcase the tweaks Samsung has made to its TouchWiz user interface for the upcoming smartphone. The 15-minute video, uploaded by HD Blog , shows updates to notifications and settings as well as new icons and colors for TouchWiz.

Verdict

It remains to be seen what will actually show up on the Galaxy Note 7, but the smartphone’s launch is likely coming soon. The Galaxy Note 7 is expected to be announced Aug. 2 in New York City. However, Samsung has yet to send out press invites for an Unpacked event.
