Far Cry Primal has now been revealed: Following Ubisoft’s two-hour-long stream of gameplay footage from the next installment of the Far Cry series, we have a pretty darn good idea of how the game is going to look, feel and play. And it looks really awesome. Oh, and it also looks a lot like Far Cry 4, but in a different setting. Old Man Internet is displeased by this shocking revelation, and man is he grumbling! But come on, people. We knew this going in.

Far Cry Primal: Not Far Cry 5, Not Supposed To Be

The two hours of Ubisoft gameplay footage revealed a lot about Far Cry Primal—the release date for which is set for Feb. 23rd—not in the way of bombshell reveals, but the general pace and flow of the game. And guess what… it’s a Far Cry game. It features the typical things one does when crying far: Sneaking into outposts (or going in guns blazing), riding animals around, killing men and beasts with wild abandon. It’s pretty much what Far Cry is all about. And it’s got grappling, and more hand-to-hand fighting, and at least a lot of the cool stuff from Shangri-La in Far Cry 4.

So, yea, a lot of the Far Cry Primal gameplay does come from Far Cry 4, and Far Cry 1, 2 and 3. Yea, it’s still based on the same engine as the last two Far Cry games, but we know that going in. Far Cry Primal is a lot like Far Cry: Blood Dragon in that it reinvents the series in terms of setting while keeping the core gameplay intact. Of course, it’s a lot bigger than Blood Dragon. A full-sized game, with the price to match. But it’s still got the same heart.

And you know what? That’s okay. This is the last gasp of the Far Cry 3 & 4 engine, and chances are we’ll see Far Cry 5 another year and a half or two down the road—a whole new Far Cry. In the meantime, we get to enjoy the special Far Cry treat of Primal. A Stone Age adventure! Hell, I loved Far Cry 4, so I won’t even complain about the similarities. This is the way Ubisoft games work between major installments anyway, so just enjoy the ride.
