Today is a big day for the Elite: Dangerous community, especially fans of the game’s arena-based PVP content, and even the most experienced pilots have something to be excited about this week.

Frontier Developments is continuing its push for a larger Elite: Dangerous community on the Xbox One in 2016. Today, those efforts take the form of two new releases. First up, Frontier has finally released Elite Dangerous: Arena, the “session-based PVP” version of Elite: Dangerous, on the Xbox One. The debut comes more than six months after the base game made its debut on the platform and two months after Elite Dangerous: Arena hit Steam. The latest ED release will be a free download for anyone who already owns Elite: Dangerous on Xbox One and only cost $7.49 if you’re a new player. But Arena is also a much more limited experience than the base game.

Here's what players can expect from Elite Dangerous: Arena, via Frontier:

  • Four agile, combat-honed space ships. Choose from the fast and aggressive Federal and Imperial Fighters, the damage-dealing Eagle or the heavyweight Sidewinder.
  • Multiple tactical options with custom loadouts unlocked by ranking up.
  • Four Arenas: Elevate’s towering view, Cluster Compound’s mining facility,Asteria Point’s cavernous space station and Ice Field’s frozen asteroid belt.
  • Eight-player Free for All, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag game modes.
  • Realistic, agile starship handling powered by Elite Dangerous’ advanced simulation technology.

In addition to releasing Elite Dangerous: Arena, the studio also announced the expansion of the game’s cosmetic shop. Previously, only PC gamers had access to the paint jobs and bobbleheads being sold on the Frontier Store; however, Xbox One gamers will also have access to all the same ship customization content going forward. Sadly, the Xbox community still won’t have access to replacement voice acting for their ship’s computer, which might not seem like a big deal until you realize that William Shatner recorded replacement vocals for the PC version. Hopefully Frontier will find a way to adapt that content soon, though.

Elite: Dangerous in is ongoing development for PC and Xbox One. The game’s next expansion, Elite Dangerous: Horizons - Engineers will make its PC debut this summer.
