Drake’s ‘Pop Style’ Feat. Kanye West & Jay Z Got Me Hype, But It’s Missing Something

So Drake and Kanye were in the studio together...with Hov. Drake’s Views From The 6 is #1 on our radar this month. While we still don’t have a hard release date, Drizzy just gave us two new records, both collabs: one featuring none other than Jay Z and Ye, and the other WizKid and Kyla.

“Pop Style” (feat. The Throne) was a bit underwhelming, especially considering the chops involved. Drizzy’s monotone growling and moaning takes over the record and overpowers the clean production. We get only two lines from Hov, Ye brings the lyricism, and Drake drops the hook, “Turn my birthday into a lifestyle.” While I appreciate the record for what it is, Drake could have hit a homerun with a stronger verse. Not to mention at least a couple more lines from Hov, I mean come on bro? Instead, we’re sitting on third base. But hey, The Throne & Drake on the same record; I guess I’ll take what I can get.

“One Dance” (feat. WizKid & Kyla) is a dancehall banger. Drake’s soft release floats over a steady reggae pulse. He sings like he does on Take Care (the album that got me officially hooked), but his voice has clearly leveled up.

The most exciting part about these two tracks is that they’re stylistically almost opposite. Views From The 6 ’s first single released Jan. 30, “Summer Sixteen,” remains my favorite so far. It’s classic Drake. However, it’s nice to see Drake testing out new lanes. If Drake’s album is as eclectic as the three singles thus far, he has my attention. Who am I kidding, I’m going to be jamming to this album all summer regardless.
