'Dragon's Dogma Online' US Release Date Still Possible, Says Director

It’s been well over a year since the last time we checked in with Dragon’s Dogma Online. At the time, it seemed Capcom had largely abandoned the idea of bringing the game to Western markets, in no small part because the game was struggling to find an audience in Japan. But the latest word from Dragon’s Dogma Online director Kento Kinoshita suggests Capcom could revisit that decision in the near future.

If you missed the latest update on Dragon’s Dogma Online when it first appeared earlier this week, you aren’t alone. In fact, I’d wager most of the Dragon’s Dogma community missed out, seeing as Kinoshita decided to tuck the headline-earning update into page 54 of Capcom’s latest annual report. The DDO director doesn’t say much, instead focusing on the upcoming third season of content planned for the game, but he does confirm a Western launch could still be in the cards for Dragon’s Dogma Online.

“The world of online games spreads ever outward,” Kinoshita wrote. “Once we have established a solid foundation in Japan, I’d like to consider bringing this game overseas, where there are a great many online game players.”

It’s far from confirmation we’ll see Dragon’s Dogma Online in the U.S., but ongoing discussion is better than 18 months of silence on the matter. At the very least, it suggests Capcom has long-term plans for the property, which certainly increases the chances we’ll see DDO hit Europe and North America at some point in the next few years. Then again, it’s always possible Dragon’s Dogma Online will ultimately join Phantasy Star Online 2 on the list of seemingly-obvious Western releases that never see the light of day.
