After the additions of Australia in February and Persia and Macedon in a spring 2017 update, Civilization 6 has been quiet. That changes with today’s announcement of new civilization Nubia, led by Kandake (“Queen”) Amanitore. One of the last great builders in the Kushitic Kingdom of Meroë, she ruled an area between the Nile and Atbaria rivers, and her reign was considered the most prosperous time for the Kushites.

Nubia’s unique ability is Ta-Seti. They get bonus production towards ranged units and all ranged units gain combat experience faster. As part of this ability, mines provide bonus production over strategic resources and bonus gold over luxury resources.

Nubia’s unique unit is the Pítati archer, an Ancient-era unit that is stronger and faster than the Archer it replaces. The Pítati archer upgrades to the Crossbow.

Nubia’s unique tile improvement is the Nubian Pyramid, which requires the Masonry tech and must be built on desert, desert hills or floodplains. They provide Faith and get bonuses from adjacent Districts, or Food for the City Centers.

Amanitore’s ability “Kandake of Meroë” allows her to gets bonus production towards building districts, and is further improved if there a Nubian pyramid is adjacent to the city center.

Many of Nubia’s production-focused abilities unlock with Masonry, so reaching that tech and building a Nubian pyramid as fast as possible should be a priority. The Pítati archer, which can be produced quickly using Nubia’s unique Ta-Seti ability, can help protect Nubia’s young cities and will form the core of Nubia’s military strategies.

Finally, there’s a new “Gifts of the Nile” Scenario that lets you choose to lead either Nubia or Egypt to see who controls the Nile River. The first player to complete seven Temples dedicated to Amun within 125 turns wins.

How do you feel about Civilization 6’s new Nubia civilization and its leader? Are there any civilizations you feel are missing? Are Nubia’s production-based bonuses and archer buffs an appealing prospect for establishing a great civilization early in the game?
