The latest Xbox Games Showcase from Microsoft unveiled the many games coming for consoles and PCs, including the next installment of Activision Blizzard's "COD" franchise, with "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7" unveiled. The event featured the next game in the series that would still continue on the "Black Ops" sub-series in the franchise, following last year's "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6."
More importantly, this new game from Activision Blizzard would pick up on the story of the previous game's plot, and while it is a time jump to 10 years later from the real-life timeline, it will still feature the same protagonist.
'Call of Duty: Black Ops 7' Is the Next 'COD' Game
During the event last Sunday, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard featured the next game in the "COD" franchise whichunveiled "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7," featuring a spotlight on the game's trailer and story. The game is revealed to be featuring recurring characters again, centering on both protagonists and villains, that players saw, played as, and fought against in previous "Black Ops" installments.
In this game, players will be suiting up as David Mason again, and here, he will lead a new Black Ops team set in the year 2035 against a familiar enemy. The game's official website revealed that it was Treyarch Games and Raven Software who serve as the developers for this game, and both are known for also previously working on "Call of Duty: Black Ops 6" released last year.
The lead, David Mason, is known for appearing in two previous "Black Ops" games from Activision Blizzard, namely the 2012 "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" and 2024's "Black Ops 6," set to reprise his role again. Mason also mentioned a single name in the trailer that gives insight as to who the villain is, and he is heard saying "Menendez," which CNET claims could be Raul Menendez, the antagonist in "Black Ops 2."
That being said, there are alternating timelines from these games, as the "Black Ops 2" from 2012 was set in 2025 andthe last year release of "Black Ops 6" was set in 1991 and looks back on previous events.
What to Expect From the Futuristic 'Black Ops' Game?
The next installment of "Call of Duty: Black Ops" would then focus on a 10-year time skip from the 2012 game as it will be set in 2035, but it would feature the same David Mason to lead the crew. According to the report, this may bring more clarity behind what exactly happened after the events of "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" as it famously gave players the choice to either eliminate Menendez or let him live.
Regardless of the players' choices, Menendez may seem to be making his return as the villain 10 years later, but itremains unknown if he will still be the leader of the Nicaraguan drug cartel and terrorist group, Cordis Die. The game's cinematic trailer shows off a more futuristic approach to covert warfare, similar to previous "Black Ops" games.
There are still no release dates for "Call of Duty: Black Ops 7," but it is expected to be released by October, and will be available on the Xbox Game Pass on Day 1.
