Zelda Wii U is a scarce beast. It always has been. It appeared to us once, long ago, for a brief time, and then was spirited away—delayed, and hidden behind a whole slew of other Zelda games. Since Zelda Wii U was first announced at E3 2014, three Zelda games have come out—Majora’s Mask 3D, Hyrule Warriors and Triforce Heroes—and two more—Twilight Princess HD and Hyrule Warriors Legends—will be out before Zelda Wii U debuts. When will the game end its long radio silence? When will we see Zelda Wii U again?

When Will Nintendo Unveil Zelda Wii U Again?

Two quick facts. First, Zelda Wii U is coming out this year—Nintendo has reiterated this time and time again. We’ll get it this holiday season. Second, the Nintendo NX, Nintendo’s upcoming games platform, may very well come out this year as well. This is the direction that many, many rumors—from Gamestop to the Wall Street Journal—point to. Add those two facts up and it all makes sense: It’s extremely logical, although unproven (and unproveable, until Nintendo says otherwise), that Zelda Wii U will get a simultaneous release on both Wii U and the Nintendo NX.

And that, of course, is a big part of the reason Nintendo hasn’t reannounced Zelda Wii U yet. If the game really is coming to the Nintendo NX as well, its re-revelation could well give insight into the system’s core features, or at least graphical capabilities. Nintendo wants to show off the hypothetical Legend of Zelda NX version, to show the game in the best possible light.

That’s why it seems likely that Nintendo won’t unveil Zelda Wii U again until the company unveils the Nintendo NX. Heck, the two things will probably happen in the same presentation—what better way to introduce the new system than by revealing a new flagship Zelda game (along with Super Mario Galaxy 3 and maybe a new Metroid). That’s the right time to show off Zelda once again.

Either way, Zelda Wii U is coming out this year, barring further delays. And that means Nintendo has to reintroduce the game sooner rather than later—certainly E3 at the latest, but probably a little earlier, if Nintendo hosts a special, dedicated presentation to introduce the Nintendo NX, like its competitors have for their new consoles. But either way, the game is coming out in less than a year… so we’ll see it again soon.
