Filming for Sherlock Season 4 began earlier this year, with the cast and crew beginning production in Cardiff. Huffington Post Morocco reports that the BBC series will film in Morocco after wrapping up the first episode. Why is Sherlock headed to Morocco? It could be for a scene relating to Sherlock’s drug-induced hallucinations or perhaps a new story arc will take the characters to Marrakech.

With Season 4 details mostly under wraps, it is hard to pinpoint the exact nature of why the team is filming in the North African country. That said, the series has cast Toby Jones to play a mystery villain in the series. Jones will reportedly appear in Season 4 episode 2, directed by Nick Hurran.

"We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family," said co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes. "I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!" Co-creator Steven Moffat added: "Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle’s finest villains.”

Gatiss and Moffat issued a press release about the new season in April hinting at the nature of the series. “ Sherlock [Season] four—here we go again!” they said. “Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street—and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake.”

Returning cast members include Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, Martin Freeman as John Watson, Amanda Abbington as Mary Watson, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, Jonathan Aris and Louise Brealey. Masterpiece has noted that the fourth season “begins with the mercurial Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), back once more on British soil as Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.”

The BBC has not made any official announcements regarding the Sherlock Season 4 release date, but it has said with “near certainty” that Season 4 will premiere on New Year’s Day.
