Sony’s decision to revive the God of War franchise has proven to be the right one. The tech company has just confirmed that the PS4 hit has managed to sell more than 10 million units since launch.

Before the recent announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that God of War crossed five million units in sales with the first few months of its release. Since then, the company did not release any followup information.

During the company’s Investor Relations Day 2019, SIE President and CEO Jim Ryan revealed the news. In his presentation, Ryan confirmed the new milestone and highlighted the strengths in sales for the firm’s first-party franchises.

According to Sony, Santa Monica’s latest entry in the God of War franchise has brought it in the same rankings as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last of Us Remastered. Both of these games, which were developed by Sony's first-party studio Naughty Dog, are now in the same bracket as God of War after it broke past the ten-million mark in sales worldwide.

The critically acclaimed PlayStation 4-exclusive title was released in 2018. During its first three days in the market, it managed to sell over three million units. After having a successful launch week, the action-adventure video game would break another record in its first month.

God of War shifted the entire franchise by introducing Norse mythology to its narrative. Shifting away from Greek mythology, the game brings Kratos and his son Atreus to a universe where they are complete strangers.

God of War was met with countless positive reviews, many of which applauded its distinctiveness. The game won a number of awards at the end of 2018, including Game of the Year from The Game Awards. The latest sales landmark is proof that the game has gone above all expectations. Given the success, it is safe to say that Sony Santa Monica will be working on a sequel.
