It’s a well-known fact that even though Arrow will continue on for a Season 6, the Season 5 finale will sync up with the very first episode of the series. Oliver runs through the woods, shoots that flaming arrow to start a fire on a beach, then gets rescued by a fishing boat. But that’s not all, according to Executive Producer Wendy Mericle.

Those flashbacks will also show what happens after Oliver gets on that boat, moments we never saw in Season 1. Whether or not these flashback scenes will take place on the boat itself, or when Oliver arrives in Star City remains to be seen.

“We’ve managed to hopefully stick the landing on it in a cool way that allows us to see both some of the moments right before we first met Oliver in the pilot, where he launched that flaming arrow and it lit up that signal fire, and also maybe a little bit after as well, some of the more emotional moments that we never got to see in the pilot,” Mericle tells Entertainment Weekly .

The whole plan of Oliver’s return to the island appears to be orchestrated in an effort to keep the fact he wasn’t stuck on the island for five years a secret. Therefore, we can’t rule out the possibility Oliver was actually familiar with the people on the boat that picked him up, even though it didn’t seem that way in the pilot. Oliver’s full beard at the time suggests he was on the island for a while before he was rescued, and we still have yet to see the conditions in which he returned. Did Talia al Ghul or Anatoly drop him off and plan his rescue for him? Did Kovar strand him there? Or, did he leave and go back on his own terms?

Are you expecting the “emotional moments” to take place on Lian Yu, the boat or Star City? Let us know in the comments.
