Android M or Android 6.0 Marshmallow has only been available for five months, but there are already murmurs about what the next Google operating system might be called. Google Senior Vice President for Android Hiroshi Lockheimer recently teased a prospective new name for the new OS on Twitter, which will likely be referred to as Android N until it is officially unveiled later this year.

Lockheimer hinted that Android N could stand for Android Nori, explaining in his tweet that Nori is a healthy and tasty treat. The SVP also included the Wikipedia page for Nori in his tweet.

At this time, there is no confirming the validity of Lockheimer’s tweet, and Android fans are familiar with Google’s affinity for teasing inaccurate Android names prior to the launch of a new system version.

Many thought Android M would be called “Milkshake” after Google Vice President of Engineering for Android, David Burke, was spotted at the Google I/O 2015 conference with an Android Wear watch with a Milkshake on its wallpaper. Similarly, Google teased the name of Android L as "Licorice" when it was actually Lollipop. Android KitKat was originally thought to be “Key Lime Pie,” prior to launch, as per hints from Google.

But let’s consider the name Nori for a moment. Perhaps, Google isn’t trying to tease that “Nori” is the name of Android N, but trying to get users to consider that the next Android OS may be named after something other than a candy bar or dessert.

Because of Google’s trend of naming its operating systems alphabetically after sweets, many believe the trend is dessert-themed. However, Lockheimer said August, in a video about Android M that the systems are named after “tasty treats,” or the kinds of foods Android developers like to eat during late night sessions of building new software. Apparently, those “tasty treats” don’t necessarily have to be sweet.

As speculation about Android N begins to pick up, what savory tasty treats could be considered for the new Android nickname? Nuts? Nachos? Noodles? Nuggets? Only time will tell.
