The Marvel-Netflix approach to costume design sets itself apart from the rest of superhero TV with more subtle adaptations of classic suits, for Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in particular. Many fans thought that would change moving into Iron Fist, the most mystical character in any of Marvel’s Netflix installments thus far. But it seems costume designer Stephanie Maslansky has something better in mind.

The new Iron Fist trailer, released today, gives us our first look at Danny Rand in a more traditional costume. Until now, we’ve only seen Danny in casual clothes such as loose fitting pants or sweats, a drapey button down exposing the dragon insignia on his chest, a sleeveless shirt, a collared shirt with bomber jacket, or a hooded sweatshirt. This new costume suggests the character may pay homage to the classic without going over the top. The only thing missing is a bandana mask and an insanely huge popped collar. It also looks like this could just be Danny’s costume on K’un-Lun.

There's always the possiblity Danny may need a mask by the time he links up with The Defenders. Who knows, maybe all the heroes will get an upgrade? But for now, it looks like we’ll see Danny in loose fitting pants, maybe shirtless (like he often did in the comics and in photos released yesterday), instead of a full-on green suit.

Series star Finn Jones recently spoke on which version of the costume we’ll see in the show, but he had a surprising, and vague, answer.

“I mean, who says there’s going to be a costume?” Jones says in the video. “This is a modern - I can’t say any more. Marvel are going to kill me. There maybe a costume, there may not be. We’re looking at a suit that, you know...”

Since Danny Rand will be doing all sorts of martial arts -- Kung Fu, wushu, dragon, tiger, monkey -- can we blame Finn Jones for vetoing an all leather get-up? What kind of costume are you hoping Danny Rand wears? Let us know in the comments below!

The Struggle Is Not Real
If you’re looking for shock value, Iron Fist does not have it. Netflix and Marvel have turned an interesting superhero into a basic bro.
  • Colleen Wing is a delight
  • The last four episodes are significantly more entertaining
  • Problematic character development
  • Lackadaisical fight scenes
