Call Of Duty: WWII will host a Private Beta for the game’s multiplayer offering in the next few weeks. A new blog post and trailer from Sledgehammer Games provides a sneak peek at what the limited test will include.

As it stands now, the Private Beta will feature at least three competitive multiplayer maps and one specifically dedicated to the objective-based War Mode and Operation Breakout. Aside from War, players will be able to fight online battles in Pointe Du Hoc, the Ardennes and Gibraltar. The standard mode suite includes Team Deathmatch, Domination and Hardpoint.

Beyond gameplay, there will also be a brief introduction to the game’s new Divisions progression system. Players can enlist in the Infantry, Expeditionary, Airborne, Armored or Mountain classes and swap between them without penalty. A small suite of weapons, scorestreaks, equipment and Basic Training perks will unlock as soldiers level up.

Unfortunately, the beta won’t showcase numerous parts of the game. Despite being suggested for the Private Beta during E3, the expansive multiplayer Headquarters hub is not yet ready for primetime. Controversial aspects like loot and Supply Drops will also be absent from the test, as will eSports-focused concepts like Ranked Play and Game Battles.

As with most multiplayer betas, the one for Call Of Duty: WWII is in no way analogous to the final game’s content roster. That being said, it’s a pretty solid preview of what the online offering will be like. We certainly would’ve liked a more concrete look at Supply Drops considering the semi-contradictory things Sledgehammer has said about them, but we’re not surprised about their exclusion. Loot systems can make or break a game’s perception in its opening weeks, so Sledgehammer is likely trying to get it just right before going public.

From what we can see in the trailer, the focus truly seems to be on map variety more than anything else. While there are lots of standard gray arenas on show, there are also plenty with green fields and other elements that add some occasional bright hues to the traditional aesthetic. In addition to open fields, however, we see some brief glimpses of trench-like environments and underground tunnels. One of the most understated elements of the clip is the first-person flight mechanic. As far as we’re aware, that’s activated via a specific Scorestreak.

Based on the new footage, the War mission and the catalog of available weapons looks fairly similar to the multiplayer offering at E3 in June. Groups of players were asked to rebuild a bridge during convention demos, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing here. If there is any new content, it will likely be fully unveiled during a special Gamescom livestream on Aug. 22.

Call Of Duty: WWII comes to PS4, Xbox One and PC Nov. 3. The Private Beta begins for PS4 pre-order customers Aug. 25. It arrives on Xbox One the following weekend.
