Elemental weapons can make your life a lot easier in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. They aren’t particularly strong or durable, so you might be tempted to ignore them. You shouldn’t. In fact, we’d recommend keeping at least one item of each of the three elements (ice, fire, lightning) in your arsenal at all times.

Here’s what each of the three types of elemental weapons do:

Lighting -based weapons will shock foes, leaving them momentarily stunned. They can also cause enemies to drop equipment, making them easier to kill and also bulk up your arsenal. Win-win!

A fire-infused weapon will instantly kill ice-element enemies. It will set other targets ablaze, depleting health and causing panic. You can use existing fires to set wooden items ablaze, like clubs and arrows.

Ice weaponry can be particularly effective, and is probably the most useful of the three. A strike from an ice-imbued weapon will freeze most targets for a short time, leaving them vulnerable to a follow-up strike worth triple damage. These weapons are particularly effective against – you guessed it! – fire-based baddies.

Spears are especially deadly when imbued with any kind of elemental energy, allowing you to do major damage from a safe distance and slow down an enemy’s approach. To conserve your elemental weapons, we recommend switching back to non-elemental weapons quickly after the effects are triggered. You’ll also be able to take better advantage of the ice damage multiplier by switching to a more powerful weapon once the enemy is frozen.

In order to keep all these different kinds of weapons around, you’re probably going to need a larger inventory. For more information about how to expand your weapon inventory, have a look at our Korok Seed Locations guide.
