The six episodes in The X-Files reboot miniseries have been a huge hit for Fox. Its average of 12.8 million viewers tops everything on the network except Empire. The X-Files premiere even topped the original series’ finale. Does this mean more episodes are on the way?

Though no one is coming out with a definitive “yes,” while speaking at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour , Fox co-CEO Gary Newman said “we would be on board if schedules can be worked out.”

Elsewhere on iDigi, you can read about the other Fox executives who have been clear about their desire for more episodes of The X-Files. Suffice to say, all the incentives are in place for the network to push hard for more.

At least one of the stars is onboard, too. David Duchovny (who has been plumping for more X-Files for years) told Ellen DeGeneres, “ I would love to, I think we all would. We’ll just see what happens.”

But whether or not Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return, there’s no way Fox is going to give up on The X-Files . And, luckily for them, it seems they already have a back-up plan in place.

The fifth X-Files reboot episode, “Babylon,” introduces two new agents, young and hungry variations on the Mulder and Scully dynamic. Hope you like Einstein and Miller, X-Files fans!

Lauren Ambrose plays Agent Einstein and Robbie Amell plays Agent Miller. They’re practically Mulder and Scully clones, with one big difference: they’re young and hawt.

Here’s X-Files creator Chris Carter description of the characters: “Einstein is Scully on steroids, and Miller is old-school Mulder—he wants to believe.”

Babylon , which sees Einstein team up with Mulder and Miller team up with Scully, is an obvious showcase for the two possible replacements.

While there’s no guarantee that Mulder and Scully will have no part in the future of The X-Files , all this talk of scheduling difficulties (what are you so busy with, David? Wait… Aquarius got renewed !?) seems to be an obvious set-up for the most likely scenario: new X-Files episodes, new agents, and a steady cameo presence from the beloved originals.
