Lizardcube is showing love to would-be Wonder Boy modders this holiday season, by releasing both the debug tools and in-game editing software the studio used to sculpt its remake of the Sega Master System hit. And accessing that software is much easier than you’d think.

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap originally debuted in 1989, before returning in 1992 on the Game Gear. But we hadn’t heard much about the franchise until Lizardcube announced it would release an HD remake in 2017. Early trailers made it clear the studio had plenty of love for the 28-year-old platformer, enough to rebuild the game with brand new art assets, and Wonder Boy received a mostly positive reception when it returned to the market in April. Now those happiest to see the franchise return will benefit from the games industry’s renewed interest in using fan-created content to extend the life of games.

The team didn’t just stop at releasing the editing and debugging tools. Lizardcube also tweeted out instructions for a handful of relatively simple ways to modify your Wonder Boy experience, like creating new dialogue for the shopkeeper. The access should also make it easier for fans to modify everything from player health And accessing The Dragon’s Trap editing and debugging suite is shockingly simple. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open your Steam library
  2. Right Click on Wonder Boy and select “Properties”
  3. Switch to the “Local Files” tab
  4. Click “Browse Local Files…”
  5. Open the “bin_pc” folder
  6. Open “Settings.cfg”
  7. Find the “Editor = false” line and change it to “Editor = true”
  8. Launch Wonder Boy and press “F” on your keyboard

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap is available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
