The Walking Dead Season 8 trailer ended with an older Rick Grimes slowly waking up in a bed and we’re a bit confused.

The trailer, which premiered during The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic Con, starts off strong with Negan threatening a frightened Father Gabriel. Well, at least he appears to be scared. We see images of Rick’s crew along with members of The Hilltop, The Kingdom, Oceanside and the Saviors. Maggie doesn’t appear pregnant, so not much time has passed in the show. But then it ends with an older Rick laying in bed.

The first thought that goes through you mind is, “Why is Rick an old man?” It wouldn’t make sense to have a time jump before the end of the All Out War arc. There is a time jump a mini time jump that happens after Glenn’s death where Maggie has her son in the comics and allows for the tension to build in the story. The next time jump happens after the All Out War arc.

The scene just looked out of place and there’s no real context for it. We don’t expect the Old Man Rick scene to be some big corny reveal, like “Oh, it was all a dream this entire time.” The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has repeatedly denied the Rick-waking-up-from-a-coma theory. It’s corny and wouldn’t make sense with the show.

While Old Man Rick might’ve thrown us off a bit, seeing Jeffrey Dean Morgan in action at The Walking Dead panel was great. Morgan provided many laughs during a somber occasion. Before the panel began showrunner Scott Gimple shared kind words about stuntman John Bernecker, who died performing a stunt fall on The Walking Dead set.

"John passed away this week after he was injured doing something he loved...helping tell stories that excite, entertain and give people escape," Gimple said. "He helped make movies and shows for people like everybody in this room. John was someone beloved in the stunt community, someone who trained other people and helped them break into the business. He was living his dream, and he helped other people do the same thing."

Morgan provided comedic relief during the panel. He loves his character Negan even if many hate him. In fact, something he loves more than anything is Negan’s sense of humor when things get rough.

“What do I like most about Negan? I find him very amusing. I think he’s got a great sense of humor. In these dark days, a sense of humor will help you get through,” Morgan said.

The Walking Dead Season 8 premieres Oct. 22 on AMC.
