Rick has the drive to defeat Negan, but that doesn’t mean he will in The Walking Dead Season 7. At least not while all the tides are in Negan’s favor.

Negan has Eugene, the brains of Alexandria. Yes, our mullet-rocking nerd is a giant coward who can be more of a pain in the ass than an asset sometimes. However, keep in mind Eugene has survived the zombie apocalypse while people stronger than him, i.e. Abraham, have died. People think all you need to survive is physical strength, but that’s not the case. This is where Eugene comes in.

Rosita’s dumb ass revealed to Negan that Eugene knew how to make bullets. You can have all the guns in the world, but bullets quickly become difficult to find.

Enter Eugene.

Negan will probably manipulate Eugene into doing his bidding, even if it’s through fear. If Eugene is smart, he’ll make sure he’s the only one who knows all the parts of making a bullet. He’ll tell Negan, ‘well I’m scared of you and you’ll probably kill me no matter what. I won’t give you my recipe, but I’ll make it for you. It’ll be my insurance, what guarantees you let me live.’

Eugene isn’t a fighter, but he’s smart. He’ll make it out alive. Even if it means others won’t. Josh McDermott, who plays Eugene on the show, recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly regarding his character’s fate. He had some fun with the interview by giving away fake spoilers, including one about his infamous hair.

“Negan made Eugene cut his luscious mullet,” McDermott said. “This was probably the most torturous thing that could’ve happened to Eugene. Even if Eugene had been on the receiving end of Negan’s bat way back at the beginning of the season, I’m sure the last thing to go through his head (beside’s Negan’s bat) was ‘I hope my hair is okay.’ Let’s be honest, Eugene is the mullet, and the mullet is Eugene. They are one in the same. A true icon.”

McDermott also said Negan forced him to write apology letters to Rick about Glenn, Abraham, Olivia and Spencer’s deaths. All jokes aside, we believe Eugene will survive Negan and the Sanctuary. He’s too valuable for Negan to lose.

The Walking Dead Season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
