An interesting crossover.
An interesting crossover. Wizards of the Coast

Crossovers in gaming is nothing new. There’s been a huge number throughout history, like Marvel vs Capcom or Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. However, this one is sure to surprise even veteran gamers. This is because Magic: The Gathering is doing a crossover with none other than The Walking Dead. Weird as that may sound, this has been made possible through MTG’s Secret Lair and is launching on October 4.

This limited drop is going to offer an all-premium-foil set of cards that will be revealed in the coming weeks, except for one. This particular card is going to be left for players to discover. With the drop already being limited itself, the pre-order is going to be offered at a limited time as well, which runs from October 4 to October 12.

If you’re a fan of the TV series, then you probably know why October 4 is the date of launch. If not, it’s the same day as the "We Are The Walking Dead Weekend” on AMC. The celebratory weekend is going to start with The Walking Dead season 10 finale The Whisperer War Final Showdown, followed by The Walking Dead: World Beyond. It’s then going to end with a special episode of Talking Dead.

In a statement, MTG SVP of Design and Development Bill Rose revealed that Wizards of the Coast is more than happy to partner with AMC in order to introduce the iconic characters of the series to the card game. He added that they can’t wait for fans of both the game and the TV show “to discover fun new ways to play when they add this Secret Lair drop to their collection.”

AMC VP for Games Clayton Newman meanwhile shared that considering MTG’s role in the history of gaming, they are excited to work with WotC. Newman went on to say that the “cards are a perfect blend of the two universes, and we can’t wait for fans to get their hands on them and discover all the tricks we’ve hidden up our sleeve.”

Indeed, there’s going to be new cards previously not available in the game. Gamespot revealed that one of the cards is going to be Negan, the Cold-Blooded. Details of the card are:

  • Mana Cost: 2RWB
  • Type: Legendary Creature – Human Rogue
  • Card Text:
    • When Negan enters the battlefield, you and target opponent each secretly choose a creature that player controls. Then those choices are revealed and that player sacrifices those creatures.
    • Whenever an opponent sacrifices a creature, you create a Treasure token.
  • Power/Toughness: 4/3

The Hollywood Reporter also revealed another card that’s part of the set which is Michonne, Ruthless Survivor. Here’s what you need to know about this card:

  • Mana Cost: 3BG
  • Type: Legendary Creature – Human Warrior
  • Card Text:
    • When Michonne enters the battlefield, create two Walker tokens.
    • As long as Michonne is equipped, she must be blocked if able.
    • Whenever Michonne and at least two Zombies attack, she gains indestructible until end of turn.
  • Power/Toughness: 3/3

The Walking Dead Secret Lair will be available for $49.99.
