Check out the behind-the-scenes video explaining some of the thought process behind the delicate and haunting song “Eternal Rest” below:

Mitsuda and his team used 10 tracks’ worth of Alainn’s voice to record the chorus, causing it to sound “almost like church music” despite being a song about death. “So the concept is a song of death, but you wrote it to have a sort of religious tone, and so there’s a sense of uplift to it in a way. The lyrics can be interpreted both ways too, with a very positive message. But of course underneath all that there’s ‘Death’ lurking,” said Alainn.

Alainn wrote the lyrics, which are a mixture of Latin and English. The Latin is derived from - what else? - the Catholic requiem mass. “It’s like something out of a Grimm fairy tale. Beautiful at first glance, but then when you really look closely, it’s frightening,” said Alainn. She compared its interweaving of lines and melody to Bach.

“As a listener you hear lyrics coming at you from all directions. It ended up very cool,” added Mitsuda, who wrote the song specifically for Alainn to sing acapella. Alainn pointed to her blue stone and hinted that it had some special connection and meaning to the game as well.

Valkyria Revolution is out physically and digitally for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (and digitally for PS Vita) on June 27. Will you be playing? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
