To the wire. Ubisoft

I’ve been following the development of Assassin’s Creed Origins fairly closely, for a myriad of reasons. Firstly, everything we know so far seems promising. Early reactions from those that gotten a chance to play the game ahead of its Oct. 27 release have been...mostly positive, bar one aspect: the fairly uimpressive facial animations. But fear not; Ubisoft is currently working on it. Director, Ashraf Ismali spoke with Loomer at PAX to tell the naysayers he’s got it under control:

“You know, when we make these demos, at some point we branch them so we can stabilize them, polish them, make sure they can be ready to be played en masse. What that means is, while we have people playing here, and we are showing stuff off and doing interviews, we have an army of talented people that are – you know, the game is content complete, it’s been content complete for a very long time – that are, on a daily basis, iterating on this stuff, and pouring a lot of passion and work, daily- there are hundreds, if not thousands of changes going into the game.”

Despite the looming October release date, the developers at Ubisoft are clearly taking their time with this one, as evident by the innovative mechanics and risks the studio has been pitching for nearly a year, most notably the new immersive combat system and its particularly expansive world (which is reportedly the biggest of the franchise yet).

The Origins team will be working right up until deadline to make sure no stone is left unturned. Remember, with a massive undertaking like this, presentation is crucial. Assassin’s Creed Origins not only has to be a good game in its own right, but it also has to exonerate the sins of previous entries from the series. Assassin's Creed Syndicate was a well-received title that underperformed in sales, which suggests a considerable portion of the fan-base are soured by the the blunders of Unity and Rogue.

Ubisoft knows this and are clearly toiling, as near as I can tell not needlessly. Executive editor over at COG Staff got his hands on an early demo of the game and said that it had him “clamoring for more,” going to say that after his first play through, it immediately moved to the top of his must play list of Fall 2017.

The rest of us will have to wait and see on Oct. 27.
