The Surge Gets Free Fire & Ice DLC And A Steep Steam Discount

A new set of elemental weapons heads to The Surge this week, courtesy of the game’s first free expansion, and one platform is getting a big discount on Deck 13 Interactive’s hardcore action-RPG to celebrate the add-on’s arrival. But don’t get your hopes up for new narrative content. This week’s free Surge DLC only expands the game’s armory.

The aptly-named Fire & Ice Weapon Pack delivers 10 new weapons for The Surge players to wield as they explore the depths of the CREO facility the game’s protagonist, Warren, must escape. The game’s first expansion divides those new toys up evenly, five fire and five ice weapons, and ties each to a non-combat task it was allegedly commissioned for. MG-branded weapons are light on physical damage but deal large amounts of fire damage. Deck 13 says the MG gear was originally intended for riot control purposes. We don’t yet know the designation for the ice weapons; however, the studio says CREO originally used the ice gear for “space travel testing tools, concepts and prototypes constructed in their very own R&D labs.”

Acquiring the new weapons won’t be easy. Deck 13 says players will find clues to the locations of each weapon in new documents added to Warren’s organizer after the DLC is installed. More weapons, enemies and an entirely new zone will also hit The Surge in a second expansion, A Walk In The Park, later this year. If that’s not enticing enough, the game is currently enjoying a steep discount on Steam. Anyone who doesn’t already own The Surge can pick up a copy of The Surge for $24.99 instead of the usual $49.99. There’s also a 33 percent discount on the game’s lone piece of premium content, the CREO Special Employee Kit; a small collection of bonus items that will help you early in the campaign. Standard pricing remains in effect on PSN and Xbox Live.

The Surge is currently available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
