Reddit launched their first official app today, and are giving out three months of free gold membership to anyone who downloads, installs and logs into it during the first week. Unfortunately the Google Play Store and the iOS App Store are sometimes a little slow changing the the order of their listings, and if you search for reddit in either store, you’ll probably only find the plethora of alternative reddit readers that have sprung up over the years, such as BaconReader or Narwhal. Keep in mind the app's initial release is limited to US, UK, Canada and Australia.

To download Reddit: The Official App on iOS, navigate to this link on your mobile device. To download the app on Android, navigate to this link on your mobile device. Currently, the Reddit: The Official App is not optimized for tablets like the iPad, but a reddit administrator said that the development team is currently iterating through designs and will be releasing a tablet version very soon.

Reddit purchased Alien Blue, a popular third-party unofficial reddit app, in 2014. With the release of Reddit: The Official App, the reddit team has finally removed Alien Blue from the app store.

Some reddit users aren’t particularly happy with the decision, saying they’ve lost features that Alien Blue had that the Reddit: The Official App doesn’t. /u/PlatonicTroglodyte made a list of these gripes in the /r/Apple subreddit, including how the new app doesn't support swiping on a comment to close a thread, can't peek & pop images to preview them without entering a thread, has an enormous compact view with an “obscene” card view, shuts off music whenever it plays a gif, can't swap between day and night mode with a triple tap, doesn’t tell you what posts you've viewed with a mark, has “miniscule voting buttons” and no capability to show flair.
