I don’t know about you, but a few days ago I started to get a little tired of Pokémon Go. I was still playing a reasonable amount, but the sheer joy of the first week was wearing off amid a horde of Pidgeys, Rattatas, Spearows and sponsored PokéStops. It’s easy to lose interest if you keep facing the same challenges over and over again. But I’ve reinvigorated my interest in Pokémon Go, and you can too. All you have to do is play the game as it’s meant to be played.

It doesn’t seem like it at first, but in reality, Pokémon Go is actually a little grindy—much like the flagship handheld Pokémon games. If you just want to catch Pokémon, you don’t have to worry too much, but to see higher-level, more powerful monsters—and to have any shot at competing in gyms—you need to really focus on getting experience and improving your level. And that’s what I’ve been doing; I’ve been playing the game efficiently and power-leveling, by camping at PokéStops, dropping Lures and Incense, using a Lucky Egg and evolving all my Pokémon for maximum experience.

But it isn’t that much fun. Treating Pokémon Go like a game you need to get good at really isn’t the way to do it. Here’s how I reinvigorated my interest: I stopped grinding, mostly stopped catching Pidgeys and I stopped dropping lures and capturing everything that came. Instead, I went for a walk through the park—the way I did in the early days. Just hitting up PokéStops, seeing other people playing, looking for Pokémon I didn’t already have, or didn’t have many of. I was exploring new environments again, catching Pokémon you don’t find on city streets, partaking in the social experience again. It felt worlds better. It made Pokémon Go great again.

It’s easy to get complacent in Pokémon Go, to drop down to the state of gameplay that requires the least inconvenience on your part. But that’s not the point. Don’t sit down in a bar or coffee shop and drop lures all day long. It’ll work; it’ll get you to a higher level. But after a while, it gets old. Instead, get out there on the streets, wandering around doing what the game is really about—catching them all.
