iOS 10: Colorblind? Directionally Impaired? Hate Using Snapchat To Record Video While Playing Music? Apple Got You, Fam

Apple Music Offline Playlist Mode: Save Data And Limit Streaming
Apple Music Offline Playlist Mode: Save Data And Limit Streaming Apple

When Apple announced the tentpoles of iOS 10 at WWDC earlier this week, they must have focused on the most boring features they could, because the reports of what’s being added to iOS 10 from the users who have installed the beta are actually pretty exciting.

Here are some of the things you can expect to enjoy when iOS 10 is released as an official update. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can install the iOS 10 beta if you’re feeling brave.

Colorblind? Apple Got You, Fam

iOS 10 users can choose between three different templates, or choose a custom hue, to alter the iPhone/iPad display colors to compensate for color blindness. The technology seems to be built on the back of the Night Shift Mode Apple implemented with iOS 9.3, which changes screen colors depending on time of day to ease glare on eyes.

The three templates Apple offers are Red/Green (Protanopia), Green/Red (Deuteranopia) and Blue/Yellow (Tritanopia). Each of these templates is tailored to a specific type of color blindness. You can change to one of these hues by going to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Display Accommodations -> Color Filters.

Another new accessibility feature is turning a triple click on the home button open the photo app.

Snapchat Is Dead, Long Live The Camera App (For Being Able To Play Music When Taking A Picture)

One of Snapchat’s sleeper killer features has been its ability to play music while the app is open and recording, allowing users to pair custom soundtracks with their videos. Due to the Live Photos feature, which Apple unveiled with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, this was no longer possible with the stock Camera app after iOS 9.

Now the ability to do this is coming back. Also coming: the ability to access the RAW data of a picture taken on an iOS device with a 12-megapixel camera sensor — extremely useful for photo editing — and audio not stopping whenever a gifv file is viewed. Unfortunately, according to reports, audio will still stop if you try to record a video while streaming to a Bluetooth speaker.

Apple Maps Getting Some Upgrades

Have a doctor’s appointment? iOS 10 will remember the location and pre-fill the calendar entry for you, warning you how far in advance you have to leave to get there in time. It can do this because traffic conditions are being added to Apple Maps.

Also being added? Avoiding toll roads, which for some reason isn’t already a tentpole feature of all map apps (*cough* *cough* Google Maps, where art thou), and automatically remembering where you parked. Maybe it does this by detecting when your iPhone disconnects from your car’s bluetooth, or maybe it does this by noticing when your average speed drops from 65 mph to 2 mph, Either way, awesome.
