Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is the latest expansion for Bethesda’s steampunk supernatural extravaganza, which already enjoys a lengthy history of excellent expansions. The Dishonored games canon currently consists of main games Dishonored and Dishonored 2 as well as “The Knife of Dunwall” and “The Brigmore Witches” story-based DLC packs for the first title. Check out the trailer for Dishonored: Death of the Outsider below:

“Death of the Outsider” follows Dreadful Whale Captain Megan Foster, once an assassin by the name of Billie Lurk, whom we met in the first game’s DLC as well as in the main Dishonored 2 story. In this expansion, Billie teams up with Empress-killer Daud in Karnaca to hunt down the Outsider himself. Can a god die? Is the Outsider a god? Billie and Daud are about to find out. In Dishonored 2 , Billie was largely used for exposition and transportation purposes, so “Death of the Outsider” promises a greatly expanded look at one of the world’s most intriguing and mysterious characters on the quest of a lifetime.

“Death of the Outsider” is Dishonored ’s first “standalone story,” meaning that it’s not strictly tied to the second game the same way “The Knife of Dunwall” and “The Bigmore Witches” were tied to the first game. It does not require Dishonored 2 in order to be played.

Preorders are available via Bethesda’s website here. “Death of the Outsider” will run players $29.99, which seems fair for a polished, stand-alone release bigger than a standard DLC but smaller than a game. For those who have been interested in the Dishonored universe but don’t want to commit to the bigger price tag for a full game, “Death of the Outsider” seems like a promising bet. In the trailer, we see Billie Lurk use her cyborg eye, creepy steampunk-android arm and uncanny powers to free the legendary assassin Daud from captivity.

“As you venture deep into the grimiest corners of Karnaca to uncover the mystery of the Outsider and his origins, you will face deadly opposition, ancient powers, and difficult decisions that will forever change the world around you,” stated Bethesda in a press release. Sounds like fans of Dishonored ’s lore should have plenty to chew on.

“Death of the Outsider” promises to build on Dishonored 2 ’s gameplay and art style while delivering an experience that can satisfy both new entrants and longtime fans alike. Some missions teased include “underground fight clubs,” “black magic cults” and “a thrilling bank heist mission.” Enemies include the immortal Envisioned, the sisters of the Oracular Order and the new Clockwork Soldiers. Contracts allow you to find and eliminate optional targets along the way.

You can also replay the DLC using OG+ (Original Game Plus) mode, which lets you use some of the signatured powers from Dishonored 2 .

But probably my favorite aspect of “Death of the Outsider” is that standalone expansions are the anti-microtransaction. Rather than force players to dip into their wallet for short new experiences, powers or cosmetic items, Bethesda and Arkane Studios have built an extensive jaunt into their own world, put a price tag on it and are releasing it into the world to be replayed and enjoyed as much as one wants. Further quality product from the original studio, collected and polished, with a single price tag, paid once? That’s the kind of future I’d like for gaming DLC in this microtransaction-riddled industry.

Excited to dip your toes back into the world of Dishonored when “Death of the Outsider” launches on Sept. 15? We know that Billie and Daud fail, but we don’t know exactly how - or what they discover about the enigmatic Outsider along the way. What secrets about the Outsider are we going to learn?
