Well, here’s a bit of unexpected news: Rumors abound that a new Paper Mario RPG is in development for Wii U, and coming out this year. These aren’t just any ol’ rumors, either. They are extensive, well-documented and well-sourced via Nintendolife , Gematsu and EuroGamer . They’re also long-lasting: Hints of a new Paper Mario also showed up way back last May . Do we know anything about the supposed new game? Not really, not in terms of content. But a few other tidbits have surfaced. Let’s take a look.

New Paper Mario Wii U Rumors: Coming This Year?

So here’s the deal with Paper Mario: Emily Rogers, a longtime Nintendo secret-finder , found out some new secrets. Specifically, five separate sources told her that a new Paper Mario was being developed for Wii U. It’s being made by Intelligent Systems, one of Nintendo’s best in-house developers. You’ll know them best for Fire Emblem, but the developer is also behind the rest of the Paper Mario series, the sadly no longer active Nintendo Wars series, and some of Nintendo’s firmware.

Now for the really exciting, juicy bit: According to the rumors, the new Paper Mario Wii U game is already in localization and testing. That means it’s very likely to come out this year, which is fantastic news—the Wii U has a thin slate after the spring, and an extra game would be quite welcome. And the Paper Mario games are pretty uniformly excellent as it is.

So, is the rumor about Paper Mario Wii U true? Obviously I can’t tell you the answer to that, I ain’t no Nintendo Co. Ltd. executive! But I’ll remind you that gaming rumors do often end up being true . This is an industry that tightly controls its access to press. Every bit of news that comes out through official channels is pretty well vetted. But that doesn’t mean companies don’t let news slip out informally… or that developers don’t tell their friends what they’re working on. Or that a big project is just an open secret, not publicly confirmed but widely known in the industry (cf. Fallout 4). When multiple sources report the same rumor, and the conduit is someone trustworthy— as in this case —it’s safe to say the rumor is “reasonably credible.” I wouldn’t bet on it just yet… but we certainly have good reasons now to hope that a new Paper Mario RPG is coming to Wii U this year.
