Now that the Gen 2 update for Pokémon Go has been out for some time now, tricks and tips regarding the 80 Pokémon from the Johto Region have begun to emerge.

Trainers may already know about the easter egg naming trick to guarantee getting an Umbreon and Espeon in Pokémon Go but that only works the first time you use it.

What if you want to raise another Umbreon or Espeon? Unlike Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon where it’s completely random trainers in Pokémon Go can guarantee an Umbreon or Espeon in another way and it has to do with the Buddy System.

According to some Pokémon Go players on the PoGo subreddit, if you walk 10KM with your Eevee and then evolve it you’ll get Umbreon or Espeon depending on the time of day.

If you want Umbreon, evolve your Eevee at night (wait for the overworld to be dark) and if you want Espeon evolve your Eevee during the day.

This is Pokémon Go ’s way of mimicking the friendship mechanic introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver.

For those unaware, in Gold and Silver you evolved your Eevee by befriending it and letting it evolve during the night or day to get Umbreon or Espeon, respectively. You did this by using it in battle and not letting it faint.

As the generations go by, befriending Pokémon is much easier and this is Niantic’s way to reward trainers for walking with their Eevee.

So have you tried this nifty little trick to get Umbreon or Espeon? Let us know in the comments section below.
