The last episode of Once Upon a Time showed the backstory behind Belle (Emilie de Ravin) and Gaston (Wes Brown). Belle plans to marry Gaston so that they can win the war. During their courtship, Belle and Gaston come across an ogre that Gaston wants to kill and Belle wants to save. She turns to books to learn of a mirror that can reveal if a person is evil or good and sets out to retrieve it. Courtesy of the mirror, Belle learns that Gaston is evil.
In Underbrooke, Hades (Greg Germann) is in trouble after he notices things are growing (e.g. a flower) which represents something bigger: the lost souls have hope. He recruits Gaston to kill Rumple (Robert Carlyle) so the former can avenge his death and provide Gaston with poisoned arrows. After Belle learns that Rumple killed Gaston, she makes it her mission to help him get closure while cleverly putting two and two together to realize that with each departed soul, Hades gets weaker.
Emma (Jennifer Morrison), meanwhile, works on trying to remove the names from the graves using information from a dream. Her dream has a monster, which Regina (Lana Parrilla) believes is representative of Emma working out her personal issues. As for Gaston, Belle accidentally pushes him into the River of Lost Souls.
Below are four things to know about the latest episode:
1. Season 5 episode 18 is titled Ruby Slippers.
2. The 18th episode marks the return of Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Mulan (Jamie Chung).
3. A promo of the 18th episode shows that fans will finally meet Dorothy (portrayed by Chicago Fire alum Teri Reeves), who has been trapped by Zelena (Rebecca Mader) in the past. Fans last saw a 17-year-old Dorothy in Season 3, played by Matreya Scarrwener, but the character will now be in her late 20s or early 30s and be less of “the iconic, pig-tailed girl from Kansas” and more of “a brave warrior for good.”
4. According to the ABC synopsis: “In flashbacks, Ruby and Mulan find themselves in Oz, where they meet Dorothy. After the three witness Zelena’s return to Oz, they look for a way to defeat her once and for all. However, Dorothy mysteriously disappears, and Ruby’s search for her new friend lands her in the Underworld. Reunited with the heroes, Ruby teams up with Emma, Regina and Snow to continue looking for Dorothy. Meanwhile, Snow and David struggle with not being able to be with their son, Neal, and devise a plan so that one of them can escape the Underworld.”
Once Upon a Time Season 5 episode 18 airs on Sunday, April 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
