Nintendo NX Rumors: 'Object Detection' Patent Hints At Crazy New 'Controller' Design

A patent filing from Nintendo was published on the NeoGAF forums on Monday, revealing a fascinating device that can detect objects and also be used as a controller and a projector. According to the illustrations, the device features cameras and mirrors to interpret objects around it in a three directional space. Maybe for next generation Amiibos? Or maybe a reader for multiple Amiibos at once?

The base of the newly revealed device certainly looks like the NFC reader for the 3DS, but also features a camera to interpret objects. The detection function means that the new patent, at its core, is a information processing system. It is also capable of transferring data to the computer.

In total, the device features an NFC area, infrared transceiver, a camera unit and fixing member that fixes the camera unit, as well as a curved surface mirror that also has a dedicated fixing member.

Hopefully a statement from Nintendo or, more likely, another leak in the coming weeks will clarify exactly what sort of features the new object detection patent will bring to the table. Obviously, the timing of the patent suggests Nintendo may be pushing a lot of new ideas in anticipation of its important next-gen NX console. However, we don't know for sure.
