On Twitter, the official Cartoon Network account tweeted a minute-long preview teaser of Friday’s upcoming Steven Universe episode, “The New Crystal Gems.” It appears that while Steven and friends were having a wild time at Pink Diamond’s human zoo (not to speak ill of the dead, but there is just no accounting for taste, Pink!), Connie had to take care of Beach City. Are you looking forward to seeing Connie’s adventures in protecting Beach City alongside Lapis and Peridot as “The New Crystal Gems”? (At least, I’m guessing that’s what the episode title refers to. I could be totally wrong and the title could refer to an offshoot of Steven’s watermelon people, armed with seeds and verve and ready to protect the planet. Could be anything. The titles can be misleading, folks. News at 10.)
Considering this last arc’s heavy content about grief, loss and responsibility, some light adventure with Connie coming into her own as a protector of Beach City featuring Peridot and Lapis’ wacky roommate hijinks sounds like just what the doctor ordered. I’ve missed Connie and always love seeing more of her, especially her development as a warrior by Steven’s side, learning how to protect and defend humanity.
(I’m still digesting the ramifications of that last arc, by the way. Amazing how four little episodes can pack such a punch. A summary of my thoughts: I’m not sure what new plot insight we gained, since it’s not like we didn’t know Homeworld was stratified before, but the character insight and depth of complexity we are achieving now? Between Steven’s breakdown in the ship, Blue Diamond’s inconsolable grief and Yellow Diamond’s gentle, even loving talk with her? Buckle in, kids.)
